A little preparation before your fence installation goes a long way toward a smooth project. Here is what you can do to help things go efficiently on installation day.
1. Know Your Property Lines
Before any fence goes in the ground, make sure you know exactly where your property boundaries are. If there is any question, get a professional survey done. Building on a neighbor’s property — even by a few inches — can lead to disputes and forced removal.
2. Talk to Your Neighbors
It is always a good idea to let adjacent neighbors know about your fence plans. Under California’s Good Neighbor Fence Law, boundary fences are a shared responsibility. A quick conversation can prevent misunderstandings and may even split the cost.
3. Clear the Fence Line
Remove any items along the fence line: potted plants, garden tools, outdoor furniture, decorations, and debris. The more room the crew has to work, the faster and smoother the installation will go.
4. Trim Back Vegetation
Cut back bushes, vines, tree branches, and any overgrowth along the fence line. This gives the crew clear access and prevents plants from interfering with the new fence.
5. Secure Pets and Children
For safety reasons, keep pets and young children away from the work area. There will be heavy materials, power tools, and open post holes during installation.
6. Call 811 Before You Dig
This is critical. Call 811 at least two business days before installation to have underground utilities (gas, water, electric, cable) marked. Your fence contractor should handle this, but it is good to confirm. At VMK Builders & Co., we always verify utility markings before starting.
7. Plan for Access
Make sure the crew can access your backyard. If there is a locked gate, leave it unlocked. If materials need to be carried a long distance, let your contractor know in advance so they can plan accordingly.
