The posts are the foundation of your fence. If the posts fail, the entire fence fails — no matter how good the boards look. At VMK Builders & Co., we strongly recommend metal posts whenever possible, and here is why.
The Problem With Wood Posts
Wood posts are buried directly in the ground and are in constant contact with soil moisture. Even with concrete footings, water eventually makes its way to the wood and causes rot. In Sacramento’s clay soil, this process can accelerate because the soil retains moisture around the post base.
The result? After 8 to 12 years, wood posts begin to soften, weaken, and lean. You will see the fence start to tilt, and replacing buried posts is expensive and disruptive.
Why Metal Posts Are Better
Metal posts (typically galvanized steel) do not rot. They are impervious to moisture, insects, and soil conditions. A metal post set in concrete will remain straight and strong for decades.
Benefits of metal posts include:
- No rotting: Metal does not absorb moisture or decay
- Superior strength: Metal posts resist wind, impact, and soil movement
- Longer lifespan: Metal posts can last 30+ years
- Less maintenance: No need to worry about post replacement
When Wood Posts Make Sense
There are situations where wood posts may be preferred — for example, when a homeowner wants a completely natural look or when budget constraints exist. When we use wood posts, we set them on pea gravel for drainage and slope the concrete away from the post so water does not pool and accelerate rot.
