Sacramento’s climate — hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters — creates unique challenges for wood fences. With proper maintenance, your fence can look great and last for decades. Here is what to do.
Stain or Seal Within the First Year
New wood needs time to dry before accepting stain. We recommend waiting 3 to 6 months after installation, then applying a quality exterior wood stain or sealant. This protects against UV damage, moisture, and cracking.
Re-Stain Every 2 to 3 Years
Sacramento’s intense summer sun fades and dries out wood quickly. A fresh coat of stain every 2 to 3 years keeps the color vibrant and the wood protected. If you notice the water test failing (water soaks into the wood instead of beading on the surface), it is time to re-stain.
Inspect Annually
Walk your fence line once a year and look for:
- Loose or warped boards
- Signs of rot at the base of posts and bottom of pickets
- Insect damage (look for small holes or sawdust)
- Leaning sections (indicating post failure)
- Rust on fasteners or hardware
Catching problems early saves you from expensive repairs later.
Keep Soil and Vegetation Away
Soil piled against the bottom of your fence holds moisture and accelerates rot. Keep the ground graded away from the fence and trim back bushes and vines that trap moisture against the wood.
Sprinkler Overspray
Check your sprinkler system to make sure it is not spraying directly on the fence. Constant water exposure on one section of fencing will cause that section to deteriorate much faster than the rest.
Repair Damage Quickly
A broken board or loose post is not just an eyesore — it puts stress on the surrounding structure and can cause bigger problems. Replace broken boards promptly and address leaning posts before they pull the fence down.
