A fence does not last forever. Over time, weather, soil conditions, and general wear take their toll. Here are five signs it is time to stop patching and start replacing.
1. Leaning or Tilting Sections
If sections of your fence are leaning noticeably, the posts have likely rotted underground or lost their footing in the soil. While a single leaning post can sometimes be repaired, multiple leaning sections usually mean the entire fence is compromised.
2. Widespread Rot or Decay
Check the bottom of your fence boards and along the posts. If you can push a screwdriver into the wood easily, rot has set in. A few rotting boards can be replaced, but if the damage is widespread — especially at the post bases — replacement is more cost-effective than ongoing repairs.
3. Missing or Broken Boards
Gaps in your fence compromise both privacy and security. If you are constantly replacing boards, the underlying structure is likely failing. A new fence will save you from an endless cycle of patchwork repairs.
4. Storm or Impact Damage
Sacramento occasionally gets strong winds and storms. If a storm knocked over a large section of your fence, it is often smarter to replace the entire fence rather than rebuild one section — especially if the remaining fence is already aging.
5. Your Fence Is Over 15 Years Old
A well-built wood fence typically lasts 15 to 25 years. If your fence is approaching or past that age and showing multiple signs of wear, investing in a new fence with modern materials and installation techniques is the better long-term move.
